“BECKY!” ARIEL CALLED FROM THE kitchen. “It’s ready.”

“Just a minute, mom,” Becky called down to her from her bedroom.

Ariel took her casserole from the oven and brought it to the table. She’d opened a bottle of wine and she poured herself a glass while she let the casserole cool.

She smiled when she heard Becky’s footsteps on the stairs, rushing down. That girl had always loved her mother’s chicken casserole and it seemed that hadn’t changed. Other things had changed of course. Ariel wasn’t sure she was pleased with the amount of time Becky was spending with Kyle. Ariel knew she’d been distracted lately, she hadn’t been keeping as close an eye on her daughter as she probably should have, and she was determined to change that.

“Sorry mom, I was just on the phone.”

“To Kyle?”

Becky looked at her mother. “Is there a problem with that?”

“Of course not, honey. I just want to make sure you’re acting responsibly.”

Becky helped herself to a large portion of the casserole. Ariel made herself a plate too. The two of them sat in silence as they ate. They both seemed to have a lot on their minds.

“Mom?” Becky said.

“Yes, honey?”

“How did you know that you were in love with dad?”

This was the type of question that Ariel had been dreading. Like all mothers, she’d always known that the day would eventually come when her little girl would become a woman, but just like all those other mothers, she wasn’t ready for it now that it was here. She knew Becky and Kyle had been getting serious, she knew they’d probably been exploring their sexuality, and she knew that this was a time that was critical for a young girl. It was a time when she needed her mother’s advice and guidance more than ever. And it also happened to be a time when Ariel herself was so wrapped up in her own life that she hadn’t had time to devote to her daughter.

“Do you think you’re in love with Kyle?” Ariel said.

“I don’t know. That’s the thing. I’m not sure.”

Ariel looked at her daughter. She had no idea how her little girl had grown up so fast. “There’s really no way I can think of to explain how to know if you’re in love,” she said.

“But there are ways you can tell, right?”

“You mean like your heart flutters, you get nervous, you can’t think straight?”

“Exactly.”

“Sometimes love feels like that,” Ariel said. “But sometimes that’s just a crush. Sometimes love feels completely different. Calm.”

“So how do you tell the difference?”

Ariel laughed. “Becky,” she said, “if you knew the answer to that question, you’d be ahead of ninety-nine percent of the women out there.”

“I need to know the difference.”

“What’s going on, honey? Are you and Kyle getting serious?” She paused, waiting for Becky’s answer.

Becky looked at her. “I guess you could say that.”

“You’ve kissed?”

Becky nodded.

“You’ve gone further?”

Becky nodded again.

“Oh, honey. How far?”

“Mom!”

“Are you using protection?”

“Mom, please, don’t.”

“What do you mean, don’t? I have to make sure you’re looking after yourself.
